From what you've said it sounds like the rod bends fairly easily... if the stiffer one "shifts far better", then the original must've been flexing. The replacement rod for mine hasn't come in yet, so I'm going to look for steel tubing - brake line, maybe - that'd slip snugly over the new rod. Sleeving it like that should keep it from bending as easily. If I find something useful I'll post it in this thread.
Gotta get my Savage going again. We live near the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I can hear it calling me... :-)
